I agree that the media hype, as well as their misinterpretation of public health procedures and terminology, is creating some level of hysteria. When WHO says that containment is no longer possible, the US media ran away with that as being a very alarming statement. That statement simply means that the disease has already spread geographically outside a single local area. We knew that already. Secondly, the various WHO alert levels are designed to enable different levels of action and guidance to countries on how they should be responding. An alert level is not meant to ALARM. In fact, it is meant to enable activities which prevent further escalation.
Media sensations do keep us glued to the television so I guess that is how they ply their trade. I am not sure that I agree with you that Mexico only has rudimentary health care. Whereas it may be difficult for people in some less developed rural areas to get clinical attention, I wouldn't say that is the cause of the deaths there. I think it is best to reserve judgement until we know more about the origins and spread of this flu. |
